PSIEE - Summer temperature variability, drought and the Atlas cedar: a tree-ring δ13C based multi-centennial record in northwestern Africa

Research Team: Soumaya Belmcheri, Matthew Hurteau, Lee Newsome

Objectives:
The objectives of this research are to identify conditions that trigger mass mortality in response to drought in the Atlas cedar forests of Algeria.  By developing tree-ring chronologies and using annually-resolved stable isotope measurements, we are reconstructing summer temperature and water use efficiency in an effort to isolate the effects of drought along a north-south latitudinal gradient.
